Jose Montoya, former Sacramento Poet Laureate and co-founder of the Royal Chicano Air Force, inspired Luis Rodriguez in the 1970s. Writing led Rodriguez out of the barrio and a life headed toward crime to become the best-selling author of books like Always Running. Montoya and Rodriguez, although generations apart, continue to set the standard for using poetry as a tool of Chicano history and education for young people.
