A Round of Hash Browns

What do you do
when it’s late
and lonely
brushes your cheek?
Listen to Tom Waits
think of all the women
you’ve loved –
you love.
Hope one of them
loves you back.
But hey
who knows.
Sometimes
it’s just about
how much
money you got
how many drinks
you can buy
and maybe a round
of hash browns
a cup of coffee
after.
Who knows?
Who cares?
You need
somebody
to talk to
and tonight
she does too.
You both do.
Anything else
is just a morning
with a stranger
everybody
trying to make
a clean getaway.

Born and raised in Decatur, Alabama, Andrew J. Thomas holds no degrees, has never won any writing contests, and rarely submits thanks to that tired old mixture of laziness and self doubt. However, he regularly participates in numerous East Bay readings and is a founding member of the annual Beast Crawl Literary Festival. He is a father, a husband, a word nerd, and on good days, a poet. He currently resides in Vacaville, California, and his first book of poetry, Strangeland, was recently published by Naked Bulb Press.
